Contribution to climate change: MapBiomas contributes to climate change mitigation by monitoring and mapping land use and land cover changes in Brazil, enabling the identification of deforestation, forest regeneration, and critical areas for conservation. This supports public policies and actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with land use.

Use of technology: The platform uses satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and cloud processing to analyze both historical and current environmental data. The system automates the classification of large volumes of images, producing detailed annual maps of land cover and land use.

Application examples:

  • Monitoring deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes

  • Supporting environmental agencies in combating environmental crimes

  • Land-use planning and evaluation of forest restoration policies

  • Tool for researchers, NGOs, and governments to track environmental trends and impacts
